The Stories and folklore of the Sioux Tribe pass on from generation to generation and although the history changes from the point of view from the storyteller

The Native American people were NOT the cruel savages that the white man paint them out to be. They were one with nature. Everything they did they asked

mother earth for.

Although I cannot pretend to know every legand but from what I have read in books and visited museums these peaceful people had traditions they passed down

from generation to generation. As a baby the mother would care for the child while the Sioux husband would go out and hunt or protect their village from invaders.

later, as the baby became a young boy the father would teach him the ways of the camp. When the boy would reach teen-age years he would already be semi-skilled in shooting with a bow. Somewhere on his 16th year the tribe would bless the young man for it would be time to go out into the wilderness for a week or more to

make his own way.

When and if the boy came back he would no longer be a boy but a man.

Later, the man would be asked to join whatever party he was best suited for: If he was to be a hunter and brave he would do so. Later, he may become higher up like a chief or medicine man. The ladies would care for their young until such time she was old enough to learn how to do certain chores. She would have to learn how to strike the teepee which was made of animal skin. This is something I respect most the Sioux and many other tribes throughout the U.S would use every part of the

animal they killed. When I worked at a butcher plant as a younger man I could NOT believe how wasteful we really are as people.

Before graduating from ITT Tech

I had to take the bus and it was the most hubling experience I ever went through. The air would get really cold, the rain would come down in sheets but none of that

really bothered me. What was terrible to see is how we have used mother earth as our own trash recepticle. I see trash everywhere I go. There are plastic bags hanging form trees and paper cups in the gutters. I see rements of where auto accidents had happened and people just leave it. Maybe it's living in the city? But no it;s in the

country as well. I am guilty too but if we don't take care of this planet who will?

When you look upon these pictures what do you see?

I see a tear straming off that chief's care worn face. I see the other cheif praying to his gods to let mother Earth take back her planet.

Please try not to litter and if you see a piece of trash on the ground pick it up and put it in the trash can. "One person can make a difference" they say.
